Latest Adjudications

The Australian Press Council has released its latest adjudications. They concerned publishing a reader's response, publishing an opinion which is likely to cause offence, and publishing tribunal proceedings. The Council also considered the use of the term "illegal immigrant" and claims that asylum seekers would "flood the suburbs". All recent adjudications are provided on the Adjudications page.

Convergence Review Final Report

The Press Council has welcomed the final report of the Convergence Review, indicating the proposals are very similar to the phased changes recommended by the Council in its submission to the Review.

Latest APC Update

Issue 7 of APC Update is now available. This issue provides details on the new package to increase funding and stengthen the independence of the Press Council.

Publishers Agree on Major Strengthening of the Press Council

Funding for the Press Council is to be doubled, rising from $0.8 million this year to $1.6 million in 2012-13 and $1.8 million in the following year. Publisher members will be required to give four years' notice of withdrawal from the Council, and Council processes will now become legally binding.
