General Press Release No. 260 (December 2003) John Hartigan to deliver Annual Address 2003 The CEO of News Limited, John Hartigan, will give the Australian Press Council's 2003 annual address on contemporary threats to freedom of speech on Wednesday (3 December). Mr Hartigan has been CEO of News Limited, Australia's largest newspaper company, since 2000. Since joining News Limited in 1970, Mr Hartigan has been a journalist, editor and executive with the company. He edited newspapers in Brisbane before being appointed editor of The Daily Telegraph in Sydney 1986. He was subsequently editor-in-chief of The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph before his appointment as Group Editorial Director for News Limited. The Press Council invites a prominent citizen to deliver its Annual Address on questions related to press freedom and press responsibility. Last year, NSW Chief Justice, the Hon. James Spigelman gave the Address. Mr Hartigan's Address, which will broadly look at a number of issues which are currently giving rise to threats to free speech and a free press, will be held in the Metcalfe Auditorium of the NSW State Library, Macquarie Street, Sydney, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday 3 December.
