Planning Days

Like many organisations with diverse interests and membership, the Press Council finds it useful on occasion to take stock of its policies and operational methods, and to discuss future directions.

The 2008 Planning Days are scheduled for 31 July and 1 August. A full report on its outcomes will be posted on this website.

In September 2005, all Council members and alternates met in Sydney to review the organisation's strengths and limitations, and to plan for its continuing development over the next three years. This follows the success of the first two Planning Days 1999 and 2002, which led to a wide-ranging review of the Council's processes and promotional activities.

The Council met in small-group and plenary sessions, to discuss issues such as:

  • The objectives of the Press Council
  • Freedom of speech through the press
  • Complaints and adjudications
  • The Council - its changing role and operational methods

The meetings generate a large number of proposals for immediate action or for further consideration by the Council at its regular meetings. A summary of the actions taken by the Council and of those it is considering appear in the APC News. The Planning Days in 1999, 2002 and 2005 led to a number of changes which were reported on in the News, as noted below.

A summary of the changes in objects and procedures arising from the 2005 Planning Days were published in the November 2005 APC News.
