Members' biographies:
Selina Day
Selina Day began her career in Perth in 1983, writing for newspapers including the Post group before being offered a position with Australian Associated Press (AAP) in Sydney in 1987. In 1999, she was appointed acting bureau chief of AAP's Brisbane bureau and in 2000 took up the position of Bureau Chief in Perth which she held for almost four years. She returned to NSW in 2003 as Deputy Bureau Chief of the Sydney office and the following year was promoted to Filing Editor, overseeing quality and consistency in AAP's editorial output. She was appointed Editorial Manager (Logistics) in 2006 and at the same time an alternate member of the Press Council for AAP. return to membership list Phillip Dickson
Phillip Dickson entered the news industry more than 40 years ago as a delivery boy for a weekly newspaper founded by his grandfather and run by his parents at Bingara in northern NSW. He continued to work at The Bingara Advocate after leaving school until becoming a news reporter and columnist at The Northern Daily Leader in Tamworth. In 1979, he joined Australian Associated Press in Sydney, where he was a sub-editor and political correspondent before leaving to work as a freelance journalist. He has held senior editorial roles since rejoining the national news agency three years later. Mr Dickson was appointed an industry member of the Australian Press Council after he became AAP Editorial Manager in 2003. return to membership list
John Dunnet
John Dunnet is from a country newspaper family whose involvement in the newspaper industry bridges three centuries. John and his brother Ian are the proprietors of The North Western Courier Pty Ltd at Narrabri in NSW. The company publishes The Courier, the Wee Waa News, Cotton Magazine,.and a number of other newspapers. After a cadetship with The Sydney Morning Herald and the completion of university studies (B.A. in literature at Macquarie and M. Litt. at UNE), Mr Dunnet returned to the family business in the early 1970s. He took an active interest in the NSW Country Press Association. He has served as president of that Association and began an involvement with Country Press Australia - the federal body for country newspapers. He has served as president of CPA. Mr Dunnet is a keen advocate of the traditional high standard of journalism and community service expected of country newspapers. He is a founding member and current chairman of the North West Magazine partnership which launched Australia's first successful regional magazine (a common insert in 13 independent newspapers) more than three decades ago. He has served as an alternate member of the Council for country newspapers since 1997. return to membership list
Roslyn Guy
Roslyn Guy is a senior writer on the The Age and a member of the Leader writing team, responsible for articulating the paper's view on current issues in the news. Roslyn joined The Age in February, 1994, when she was recruited from the Victorian Department of Education as inaugural editor of Student Update, a weekly section for VCE students that explored social and educational issues as well as providing space for young people's writing. In 2000, she was appointed Education Editor, and for the next four years was responsible for The Age's reporting of school and university news as well as editing the weekly section, Education Age. She is the author of a number of education texts. Ros was appointed to represent The Age on the Press Council in June 2006. return to membership list
Peter Jeanes
Peter Jeanes is Editorial Manager of The West Australian, published by WA Newspapers Ltd in Perth. During a in journalism dating from 1967 Peter Jeanes has filled many roles on the Editorial floor. He started as a cadet journalist with The West Australian in 1968 and was transferred to the paper's Melbourne bureau in 1972. In 1984 he was appointed Chief Sub-Editor. From 1990 to 1995 he was Editor of the Kalgoorlie Miner, Western Australia's only regional daily newspaper, and was appointed to his present role in 1996. Mr Jeanes serves on the media and events committee of the Salvation Army and is a councillor at the Cottesloe Town Council. He is a member of the Fremantle Football Club, East Fremantle Football Club and a life member of Collegians Amateur Football Club. He enjoys fishing, reading and trying to keep fit. return to membership list
Chris McLeod

Bruce Morgan is General Manager of Ballarat's daily newspaper The Courier, and formerly its editor. As Group General Manager of Ballarat and the Western Region, he also is responsible for overseeing newspapers in Western Victoria through to Horsham. By 2007, he has 34 years experience in newspapers covering metropolitan, regional and country newspapers in four states and in a variety of positions, including having worked on all three daily newspapers in Tasmania. Bruce has broad community connections including Patron of McCallum Disability Services and a member of the Board of Management of the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery. He is a founding member of the Committee for Ballarat and has served as a member on the University of Ballarat governing Council. In 2001 he was invited by the State Government to be a Victorian Australia Day Ambassador. In 2002, Bruce established The Courier Charity Fund, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for distribution to Ballarat-based charities. In 2005, he proposed a leadership program through The Courier which led to the formation of Leadership Victoria & Western Region, based on the Williamson Foundation's Leadership Victoria, which graduates 26 Fellows each year and has corporate and government funding for the next three years. Commissioning editor and senior writer, Sydney Morning Herald, since 1998. Former editor Australian Financial Review 1988-92. Since 1991, Chair of JUST SUPER, the $750 million superannuation fund covering journalists and actors. John Fairfax Group representative, or alternate, on the Australian Press Council since 1999. Attended Monash and La Trobe Universities, Bachelor of Arts (1978). Completed a MA (distinction) in history at University of Sydney (2002) After various casual jobs as a builder's labourer, farm labourer, clerk, skin diver and spray painter in Victoria and north western Australia, began in journalism at a Melbourne suburban newspaper in 1976 and worked at Australian Associated Press and the Australian Financial Review as a politcal and industrial relations reporter until transferring to Sydney as AFR news editor in 1986, then editor after 1988. Editorial director of The Magazine Group from 1993 to 1998 Appointed senior writer, Sydney Morning Herald 1998 and worked as education editor and NSW political correspondent before being appointed to the current position in 2005. Sam North been at Fairfax for the past 28 years, coming from the Newcastle Herald to the SMH in 1989. At the SMH, he has been, variously, deputy sports editor, Olympics editor, letters editor, Olympic productions editor, Northern Herald editor, Fairfax chief of staff Sydney Olympics, and organised and led the Fairfax team to the Athens Olympics. Sam has been been a senior writer, winning National Press Club award for writing, and Fosters Racing Writer of the Year award for best feature. At the moment he is Managing Editor, SMH and Sun-Herald. Born in March 1951, Sam is married, with two children. David Sommerlad
David was the Executive Director of Country Press Australia and Country Press Association of NSW from 1988 until recently, when he assumed a lessened responsibility with the organisation, for industrial matters. He was born 29 April 29 1929 in Roseville NSW. He was married to Joan on May 21 1955. They have 3 daughters and 2 sons. David was educated at Sydney Grammar School. His career has included Director/Chief Editor of the Northern Newspapers Pty Ltd (Inverell) 1963-77 and of Nornews Ltd (Armidale) 1977-81, and later Executive Editor of Rural Press Ltd 1982-88, before moving to CPA. He has also served as Managing Director of Television New England Ltd 1962-88, and Carillon Development Ltd since 1988 and as a board Member of National Printing Industry Training Council since 1994, Country Press Association NSW since 1958 (including a stint as President 1983-86 and as President of Country Press Australia 1987-88), Council of Australia 1987-96, Australian Publishers' Bureau, the National Council of the Commonwealth Press Union since 1987; New England Regional Council 1972-75 and NSW Country Schools' Rugby Union since 1987. Pam Walkley
Pam Walkley is a widely experienced finance journalist. Throughout her career Pam has specialised in business, investing and property, taking over as Editor of Australian Property News in 1984, at the same time as writing for BRW and Personal Investment magazines. In 1988 she moved to the Australian Financial Review as Property Editor and later become News Editor and Chief of Staff of the AFR, a position she held for about seven years, with a one-year break when she was national communications director for one of the world's largest real estate consultants, Jones Lang LaSalle. In early 1999 she moved to Australian Consolidated Press to launch Money Magazine, which quickly become Australia's biggest-selling personal investment magazine. As well as editing Money, Pam writes a monthly personal investment column for Australian Women's Weekly. Pam was appointed as an alternate member of the Council in 2001 and became to ACP representative in early 2007. return to membership list |
