Australian Press Council

Press Council Members

As from November 2009, the Council has 15 members, one of whom is the Chair, Professor Julian Disney, who has been Chair since December 1, 2009.

Public, independent journalist and editor members are appointed by the Council on the nomination of the Chairman. There is a panel of eight public members (of whom the Vice Chair and five others attend each meeting). There are also an independent journalist members (from a panel) and an eminent former editor member (from a separate panel). Additionally, the MEAA now appoints a member, and there are five further members representing the industry constituent bodies: one each from News Limited, Fairfax Media and the magaizine publishers, one alternating between representatives of WA Newspapers and AAP, and one alternating between the community/regional press, comprising the niominees of APN news and Media, Country Press and Community Newspapers of Australia. The industry representatives can have alternates who act in their absence.

The Council seeks to ensure that its membership covers a wide range of qualifications, experience, community interests and regional representation. Public members are selected having regard to personal qualities, including community involvement, as well as the need for gender, ethnic and regional balance. Members are expected to act and vote as individuals, not as representatives of the bodies that nominated them. There is a procedure whereby members declare any direct or indirect interest in complaints before it. Members who declare such an interest leave the meeting when they have been directly involved in the processing of a complaint. In any case, members with a declared interest take no part in the debate nor do they vote on it.

Current Members and Alternates

A list of the current members and alternates follows. Biographies of the members are contained in separate pages. There are three such pages:

  1. Chairman and Public Members
  2. Industry members and their alternates
  3. Journalist and Editor members and their alternates

A list of the Chairmen, Vice Chairmen and Executive Secretaries since the foundation of the Council is contained in the history of the Council.

The APC office is in Sydney, but the Council and Complaints Committee often meet in other centres.
